Arlington County is preparing a new municipal site. Should Alexandria follow suit?
Over the last several years, some members of Alexandria City Council—most notably Councilman Paul Smedberg—have expressed concerns that the city’s website is clunky and difficult to navigate. It’s an issue speakers at council hearings have also addressed from time to time. Just to the north of the city, Arlington County is in the process of building a new website with a version of WordPress that it hopes to launch by the end of the year, according to ARLnow. Arlington officials believe the open-source content management system will reduce the costs of upkeep and development, make it easier for county employees to update pages and improve navigation. • For the quickest updates, "like" Del Ray Patch on Facebook and follow @delraypatch on …

Sewage release impacting three streams.
Arlington County issued a warning Tuesday for people and their pets to avoid Four Mile Run from Columbia Pike downstream to the Potomac River until further notice following a sewage release, according to ARLnow. Arlington Branch and Lower Long Branch are also impacted by the sewage release. According to ARLnow: The sewage release was the result of a blocked 12 inch sewage pipe, in the area between the Dominion Plaza Apartments (1200 S. Courthouse Road) and the Arlington Village Condominiums (1400 S. Barton Street), near Columbia Pike. Crews are now working to remove the blockage and to stop the flow of raw sewage. If you’re enjoying the warm weather in Four Mile Run Park, it’s best to stay on the trails with your pets and away from the …

S. Glebe Road grocery store has been closed since the spring because of interior flooding.
The Harris Teeter grocery store located at 3600 S. Glebe Road just north of Alexandria will remain closed for the foreseeable future, according to ARLnow. The store closed in May after a sewage backup caused interior flooding. It was determined the backup was caused by a clog at the nearby Arlington County Water Pollution Control Plan. A Harris Teeter representative told Patch in August that the store would reopen but offered no firm date. A Harris Teeter spokeswoman told ARLnow the store will not reopen until the company can be assured that measures are in place to prevent another sewage incident. “We are actively working with both the county and our landlord to discuss solutions to make sure that which happened does not happen again,” …

S. Glebe Road grocery store has been closed since May 11.
The Harris Teeter on S. Glebe Road will reopen, but a spokesperson with the grocer said there is no confirmed date as to when the store will resume operations. “When the store reopens, it will have all of the attributes of a new store,” Danna Jones of Harris Teeter wrote in an email to Patch. “Our goal is to continue to work hard to get this store open with an improved shopping experience for all of our customers. In the meanwhile, we apologize for what our customers have had to endure and encourage them to shop other Harris Teeter stores in the area.” On May 11, the grocery store just north of Alexandria's border in Arlington County located at 3600 S. Glebe Rd. closed after a sewage backup caused interior flooding. The flooding occurred …

Hopes for a left-hand turn lane from Mt. Vernon Avenue onto South Glebe Road remain slim.

In an effort to improve north and southbound approaches to a busy intersection connecting Alexandria and Arlington, the traffic signal at the corner of Mt. Vernon Avenue and South Glebe Road was recently retimed. The cycle length of the signal was reduced in May by Arlington County to aid approaches to both Mt. Vernon Avenue and Arlington Ridge Road, especially in the peak morning periods. Traffic routinely backs up on Mt. Vernon Avenue near the intersection in Arlandria during peak hours because vehicles have a hard time making the left turn onto Glebe Road. The reduced cycle length does not provide the dramatic improvement that could be accomplished with the addition of turn lanes, but it does offer short-term mitigation, according to a …

I'm a new resident, and I very much appreciate the current Alexandria web site for all the information it provides. Sure, there are aspects that are "clunky" and eventually should be changed, to reflect newer usages and technologies, such as smartphones. The key here is how much information/support is provided by the city leadership and staff and the time they spend in the dynamic process of …   more ›
