In the morning, the former Virginia governor participated in a roundtable discussion with Latino business leaders at SBG Technology Solutions near Braddock Road Metro station. Kaine then took a walking tour of Arlandria, making stops at Marcela’s Bakery, El Pulgarcito and Beatriz Hair Salon and Academy. He was escorted by Juan Nelson Zavaleta, president of the Arlandria-Chirilagua Business Association, and joined by State Sen. Adam Ebbin (D-30th) and Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille. “The…

Arlandria CVS to Close Saturday

Pharmacy records will be transferred to Old Town location.

The Mount Vernon Village Center CVS Pharmacy store located at 3811 Mt. Vernon Avenue will end operations at 6 p.m. Saturday.  A bulletin posted on the storefront reads: “All customer records will be maintained at the corporate level and be accessible at any CVS of your choice at any time.” A sign next to the cash register at the store’s pharmacy says prescription records will be transferred to the CVS Pharmacy located at 501 King St. in Old Town. The Mount Vernon Village Center is scheduled for a massive renovation. The project, approved by City Council in December, calls for demolishing the existing shopping center along Mt. Vernon Avenue and replacing it with two, six-story mixed-use buildings that will include 53,000 square feet of …

this comment is a joke....it's convenience value service where they get CVS...they don't have the wholesale buying power of big box (now there's true exploitation think WalMart) or even Giant or Safeway AND UNLIKE Supermarkets (except the ethic brands where you should check their pricing) they go first into many new projects and continue to operate in neighborhoods of "mixed" demographics (this a…   more ›

Council Approves Trolley Route Serving Del Ray and Arlandria

Motorized trolley will use Commonwealth Avenue and Braddock Road to reach Braddock Road Metro station as opposed to initial recommendation of West Street.

Trolley service will make its way to Del Ray and Arlandria beginning this fall. On Wednesday night at City Hall, Alexandria City Council unanimously approved a route that will send free, motorized trolley buses from King Street Metro north along Commonwealth Avenue, then turn right on Braddock Road and stop at Braddock Road Metro station. The trolley will then track back to Mt. Vernon Avenue, run north, make a left turn onto W. Glebe Road, right onto Russell Road and right back onto Mt. Vernon Avenue to return.  The first recommended route, initially released in March, terminated at W. Reed Avenue, short of the heart of Arlandria. At the time, members of the Arlandria-Chirilagua Business Association and other stakeholders said they wanted …

Trolley Meeting Scheduled for Saturday

City will discuss proposed route and hours of operation for Mt. Vernon Avenue trolley.

Alexandria is holding a second public information meeting concerning expansion of motorized trolley service down Mt. Vernon Avenue at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning at Cora Kelly Recreation Center. At the meeting, city officials will present an overview of the project and discuss preferred routing, hours of operation and headways. In March, Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services revealed the proposed trolley route (see attached map) at a public meeting. At the time, members of the Arlandria-Chirilagua Business Association raised concerns that the proposed route didn’t go farther north into Arlandria. A few weeks later, members of Alexandria City Council also expressed concerns about the route not going a few more …

I will be there on Saturday to support the Arlandria businesses that were left out the first itme. Jim Mathews of the Birchmere, with their brand new stage woould like the Trolley. RT's would like the Trolley. You could shop at Mom's organic with the Trolley, and you could get to the new 470 unit building with the Trolley. It would be a win-win for Arlandria and Del Ray.   more ›

Trolley Service Will Not Debut at First Thursday

DRBA President says free motorized trolley could be demonstrated later in May.

Trolley service will not debut on Mt. Vernon Avenue during this week’s First Thursday street festival. Del Ray Business Association President Maria Wasowski said the city had previously made a commitment to demonstrate the motorized trolley at the first First Thursday of 2012. However, discussions of the trolley’s regular service route, particularly how far north into Arlandria the free trolley should travel, have temporarily stalled the project. “The folks at [Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services] feel that they have to have the route figured out before they run the trolley on First Thursday, so we won't have it this month,” Wasowski wrote in an email. “We hope to have a trolley running during the June …

With more than a half-dozen routes on the drawing board, Alexandriaʼs Department of Transportation and Environmental Services announced Wednesday that it has selected a recommended route for trolley service in Del Ray. The preferred routing for the trolley, revealed at a community meeting Wednesday night at George Washington Middle School, will start at King Street Metro station, head east on King Street, then north on West Street, stopping at the Braddock Road Metro station. From there, the trolley will hop on Braddock Road and head up Mt. Vernon Avenue. The trolley will cross over West Glebe Road, then head east on West Reed Avenue, passing Cora Kelly Recreation Center. Then the trolley will go down Commonwealth Avenue, turning right on …

Decisions like this are made by bureaucrats with scant regard for public input at such a regular basis that it's no wonder the first local glance at the plan after the fact reveals many flaws and issues that could've been ironed out with a modicum of public input prior to an official city recommendation. "The route starts at the King St. Metro and stops at the Braddock Metro. When I asked why it …   more ›

ACBA Supports Shopping Center Redevelopment but Poses Gentrification Concerns

Proposal will go before City Council on Saturday.

Members of the Arlandria-Chirilagua Business Association expressed concerns that the proposed redevelopment of the Mount Vernon Village Center would spur gentrification in the neighborhood during a meeting Tuesday with project developers at Cora Kelly Recreation Center. The group’s board, however, unanimously backed the proposal. ACBA President Nelson Zavaleta spoke in support of the project at a Dec. 6 Alexandria Planning Commission meeting where the project was approved. The proposal calls for razing the current shopping center—which houses businesses like MOM’s Organic Market, Fashion K City and a CVS—and constructing two, six-story mixed-use buildings that will include 53,000 square feet of street-level retail space and more than 480 …

This will make traffic in Arlandria, particularly along Mt Vernon, absolutely miserable at rush hour. They will certainly need to install at least one additional traffic light to let residents in and out, further slowing through traffic on the road. Then you have all those additional people trying to travel on the road. It is already terrible northbound after about 7.45 AM (my personal record is …   more ›
