Del Ray Shakes its Turkey Legs

The 37th annual Alexandria Turkey Trot sends more than 4,600 runners through the streets of Del Ray and Rosemont.

Organizers believe a record number of participants graced the 37th edition of the Alexandria Turkey Trot on Thursday. More than 4,600 runners, walkers and stroller-pushers signed up prior to race day, with several hundred more registering in a small window before Thursday morning's starting gun. The 5-mile trot, which sends runners through the streets of Del Ray and Rosemont, was staged at George Washington Middle School for the second straight year. Organizers made the move last year to make the race Metro accessible and to provide a bigger staging area. Sheriff’s Office Donates Food, Delivers Thanksgiving Meals

The Alexandria Sheriff’s Office assisted with the ALIVE! food program.

Employees of the Alexandria Sheriff’s Office are helping make a brighter Thanksgiving for those in need. On Monday, deputy Valarie Wright delivered several boxes of nonperishable canned and dry goods to ALIVE!’s food program as part of an annual Alexandria Sheriff’s Office tradition. ALIVE! (ALexandrians InVolved Ecumenically) is a nonprofit of volunteers from more than 40 religious institutions and the community working to help those in need in Alexandria. Wright led a month-long drive among staff members, who donated food such as canned tuna and meat, peanut butter, pancake mix and breakfast cereals, as well as cash, which was used to purchase more food. Northern Virginia Nonprofits Join to Create Service Mini-Walk

Fannie Mae will not host the National Mall Help the Homeless Walkathon next year and has moved to a 'mini walk' model.

Six Northern Virginia nonprofits have allied to put together a regional mini service walk in response to mortgage giant Fannie Mae’s decision to cancel its popular Help the Homeless Walkathon on the National Mall for 2012 and beyond. “We had been thinking about doing something like this for a few years now and we’d already started to do mini walks at summer camps and other activities,” said Judy Pirozzi, director of resource development at Wesley Housing, a nonprofit concerned with affordable housing in the area. In 2010, 14,000 walkers on the mall participated in Fannie Mae's event, generating $5 million for 118 organizations with an additional $1.5 million raised by 100,000 participants in 715 mini-walks, according to an article in the …
