Members of the Alexandria Transportation Commission voted Wednesday to request the city continue to run the King Street Trolley every 15 minutes instead of reducing service to every 20 minutes. “I’m concerned about the ridership impacts,” said commission Chairwoman Jennifer Mitchell. “We see tremendous benefits to Old Town, and it really impacts the rest of Alexandria not having those trips being made by car.” Commissioner Kevin Posey asked why trolley service was being cut when the DASH subsidy was being increased, another feature of the fiscal year 2014-23 Capital Improvement Program. The Alexandria Transit Co. runs nine DASH routes in the city with 73 vehicles, plans are to double fleet.
A recent study of Alexandria’s DASH bus system found the system scored low on issues of accountability, finance and accounting, procurement and transparency. The city undertook the study in light of increasing ridership to determine how to best support the growth of the system, which operates as a separate nonprofit under the guidance of City Council. The Alexandria Transit Co. runs nine DASH routes in the city and has a fleet of 73 vehicles, which is scheduled to double by 2020. On accountability, the study found the ATC board needs additional transit and finance expertise and better oversight and coordination with the city. The Alexandria Transportation Commission was briefed on the proposed program Wednesday night.
Alexandria is one step closer to having its own car sharing program following a generally favorable reception from the city Transportation Commission Wednesday night. The program, Careshare Alexandria!, would initially provide parking spaces in Old Town Alexandria and Carlyle, Faye Dastgheib, a principal city planner, told the commission. “Car sharing, as we all know, is a cheap, green and easy alternative,” she said. The only current on-street spaces reserved for car sharing in the city are near the Braddock Road Metro station, but that was intended to be a temporary fix, Dastgheib said. Car sharing programs allow members to reserve a car for hourly use. Individuals can become members of a car sharing service by paying a flat annual fee. …

When the Transportation Commission meets in December, it will be my last as its Chairman. I am pleased to say that our Commission made progress in moving Alexandria down the path to sustainable transportation policies. The most important of these was the City’s Complete Streets policy, which we originated. It also happens to be our biggest piece of unfinished business. The Complete Streets policy calls for ALL users to be accommodated whenever a project is considered. If a new street is built or an old one repaved, the City’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services must look into making it usable for pedestrians, cyclists, and transit, rather than just cars. The idea is to make streets safe for something other than a Hummer…

The Alexandria Transportation Commission voted in favor of a modified version of the city’s plan for a redesigned King Street Metro station following a public hearing Wednesday night. The city’s plan envisioned a new station design at a cost of $6.95 million, combining $4.75 million in grants and $2.2 million from the Alexandria Transportation Improvement Program. The commission voted to add shelters at the Kiss-and-Ride area and dynamic message boards for buses to the city’s preferred plan. The commission rejected constructing the project in six phases instead of two to minimize the impact to station operations and installing a brick sidewalk on Diagonal Road as opposed to concrete.
