The man accused of shooting Alexandria Police Officer Peter Laboy will face a mental competency hearing after a judge granted a defense motion Friday, according to NBC Washington. Kashif Bashir, 27, is facing one count of attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer, one count of aggravated malicious wounding and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The off-duty Arlington County sheriff’s deputy who police say was involved in the homicide of 22-year-old Julian Dawkins early Wednesday in Alexandria’s Lynhaven neighborhood is not being held in custody because he is not considered a flight risk by authorities, according to WUSA9. • See: Dawkins' Death Ruled a Homicide Dawkins was shot following an early morning confrontation with Sheriff’s Deputy Craig Patterson, police said. A circuit court grand jury has indicted Marie Maybell Johnson in the murder of 94-year-old Del Ray resident Elmer Roehrs. Commonwealth’s Attorney Randy Sengel said his office presented its case against Johnson to the grand jury during its regular session on Monday. Kashif Bashir facing slew of charges in Feb. 27 shooting incident that wounded Alexandria Police Officer Peter Laboy.
The suspect in the February shooting of Alexandria Police Officer Peter Laboy was indicted by an Alexandria Circuit Court grand jury Monday. Kashif Bashir, 27, is facing one count of attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer, one count of aggravated malicious wounding and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The attempted capital murder charge and aggravated malicious wounding charge each carry sentences of 20 years to life. The firearm charges each carry three-year sentences. Trial dates will be chosen in the next 10 days. Bashir is being represented by the Alexandria Public Defender’s Office. Alexandria police officer Morton Marshall Ford III, who died in 2011, was among those added this week to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Wall. In remarks to an estimated 20,000 officers, families and supporters at a ceremony Monday at the wall in Washington, DC, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said the dead represented “the best of our nation.” In all, 321 new names were added to the wall and honored with a candle-light vigil Monday night, including 120 who died in 2012. Jacob Choi ran into the street May 4 on Stevenson Avenue.
Alexandria police have released the name of the 4-year-old boy who was struck and killed May 4 when he ran into the street and in front of an oncoming SUV. Police identified the boy as Jacob Choi. They did not say if he lived near the crash area, on Stevenson Avenue in West End Alexandria. A police spokeswoman earlier said that Choi had family in the area. The boy was walking alongside the road with his mother when he broke free and ran, said Alexandria police spokeswoman Ashley Hildebrandt. The boy’s mother ran after him and sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Speed was not determined to be a factor in the crash, and the 84-year-old driver of the Jeep SUV faces no criminal charges. When there is a death that is declared a homicide the suspect in which is guilty normally that person is incarcerated and charged with murder. He did not have to shoot that boy.
