Children to the rescue — A group of children helped save a baby sparrow thanks to lessons learned during a class trip to the Vola Lawson Animal Shelter. On May 5, an Animal Control officer was dispatched to the 900 block of Wolfe Street to assist a bird that had fallen out of a nest. Upon arrival, the officer was flagged by a group of children who had placed the nestling in a plastic ice cream container filled with dry grass clippings. The young bird was chirping away. Dog bite in pet store — An Animal Control officer responded to an incident at the Potomac Yard PetSmart where a dog bit a customer at the store. On April 27, an officer was dispatched to the PetSmart located 3351 Jefferson Davis Highway after a biting incident was reported. Upon arriving at the scene, the officer spoke with both the bite victim and the owner of the dog. The victim suffered a minor leg wound and did not require medical treatment. Injured owl rescued — An Alexandria Animal Control officer rescued an injured Barred Owl that was attacked by a murder of crows in the 2800 block of King Street. On April 11, an officer responded to a report of an injured owl that was unable to fly away from a flock of crows. Upon arriving on the scene, the officer was directed to the location of the owl by the man who placed the report. He had remained close to the owl to fend off the crows. Pesky pigeons — An Alexandria resident was asked to release a flight of pigeons being held in the 200 block of S. Jenkins Street. On April 9, an Alexandria Animal Control found more than a dozen pigeons in a coup and others were scattered across rooftops in the West End after responding to a complaint about the birds. Animals in hot cars — Alexandria Animal Control is reminding city residents that it is illegal to leave animals confined in a car when the outside temperature is 70 degrees or higher. On March 30, an Animal Control officer was dispatched by Alexandria police to the Landmark Mall parking lot for dogs confined in a car. While there was no violation, the officer prepared a warning notice for the owner of the vehicle advising that it is illegal to leave animals in cars when temperatures reach 70 …

Bird in dryer vent — An Animal Control officer discovered a bird trapped in a dryer vent on March 22 in a residence in the 3200 block of Gunston Road. The officer received a call reporting an unknown animal was stuck inside a residence in an area near a washer and dryer. Upon arriving at the residence, the officer determined the animal was a bird and it was located somewhere in the flexible vent pipe connected to the dryer. Squirrel in Del Ray apartment — On March 3, an Animal Control officer was approached by a person on the street who was concerned about a squirrel loose inside an apartment in the 2400 block of Mount Vernon Avenue. The citizen was on her way to purchase a trap from a store when she noticed an Animal Control van parked on the street.
