Route 1 Transitway Construction to Begin Soon

Alexandria section of the Crystal City-Potomac Yard transitway expected to be running in December 2013.

Construction of the Alexandria portion of the Crystal City-Potomac Yard transitway along Route 1 will begin later this month, bringing plenty of changes to the corridor. The Bus Rapid Transitway in Alexandria will consist of exclusive bus lanes in the median of Route 1 between Potomac Avenue and E. Glebe Road. The transitway will eventually connect the Braddock Road and Pentagon City Metro stations and will be constructed in concert with Arlington County. The BRT will offer fast, reliable and safe bus service, project planners said at a community meeting in April. Council approved the transitway in May and made provisions to monitor traffic and parking on streets near the transitway. With new northbound lanes now in service, the former …

City Seeking Citizen Input on Trolley Service Expansion

At a community meeting, West Street residents say their street is ill-designed to handle motorized trolley service connecting Old Town and Del Ray.

Alexandria’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services is reaching out to citizens for input on six alternative routes for the expansion of motorized trolley service onto Mt. Vernon Avenue.  T&ES posted a survey on the city’s website asking for citizen preferences on routes, the name of the line and hours of service. All six route alternatives begin at King Street Metro station and terminate at varying destinations after moving north along Mt. Vernon Avenue. Two of the alternatives go all the way to Arlington Ridge Shopping Center across Four Mile Run. Some suggested routes use West Street to connect Old Town with Del Ray, while others use Commonwealth Avenue. The routes using Commonwealth Avenue do not make stops at Braddock…

Citizens Express Concerns About Construction Impacts of Potomac Yard Metro Station

Project planners hear from citizens at community meeting following briefing on three station alternatives.

Alexandria citizens expressed concerns with the construction of a Potomac Yard Metrorail station that would impact nearby wetlands and the George Washington Memorial Parkway during a community meeting Thursday at Cora Kelly Recreation Center. Project planners with the city used the event to brief the crowd on three build alternatives for a station under evaluation as part of an environmental impact study for the project.  A no-build alternative is also being evaluated. It includes improvements to existing transit options in the area. Two of the three station alternatives—an at-grade station located between the parkway and CSX tracks on a new track alignment north of Potomac Greens and an aerial station located west of the CSX tracks almost…

Transitway to Alter Route 1 Intersections

Bus Rapid Transitway construction expected to begin in July.

The creation of the Crystal City-Potomac Yard transitway will alter the layout of Route 1 to offer fast, reliable and safe bus service, project planners said at a community meeting Wednesday at Cora Kelly Recreation Center. The Bus Rapid Transitway in Alexandria will consist of exclusive bus lanes in the median of Route 1 between Potomac Avenue and E. Glebe Road. The transitway will eventually connect Braddock Road and Pentagon City Metro stations. Work is being performed in partnership with Arlington County.   The northbound lanes of Route 1 are currently being expanded. To create the BRT, the existing northbound lanes will be repurposed with concrete for a two-lane bus way. There will be 12-foot landscaped medians on either side of the …

Council Questions Preliminary Trolley Route into Del Ray

Members express concern that trolley route doesn't go farther north on Mt. Vernon Avenue.

The Alexandria City Council tapped the brakes on the proposed motorized trolley service in the Del Ray area on Tuesday after members expressed concerns with the proposed route, the name of the line and lack of consultation with some civic groups. Mayor Bill Euille also expressed some displeasure with how council failed to receive a briefing on the matter from the city’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services before it was discussed in the press. “I just think we need to be very cautious in terms of when we do presentations, what we say, in terms of making certain that the legislative body that has to make the final decision is fully cognizant in terms of what you’re doing out in the community,” Eullie said. T&ES revealed …

The trolley name should indicate Mt. Vernon Ave. Perhaps it could be the Mt. Vernon Ave/Del Ray Trolley? Many visitors might not know that Mt. Vernon Ave. is in Del Ray. For the preliminary runs, extending it a few blocks to include Arlandria may be good; however, if the preliminary plan has limited funding, keeping the current plan could help to determine the trolley's popularity. I hope that …   more ›

Transportation Commission OKs Plans for King Street Metro Redesign

The Alexandria Transportation Commission held a public hearing Wednesday night about a redesigned King Street station. Some residents criticized the plan.

The Alexandria Transportation Commission voted in favor of a modified version of the city’s plan for a redesigned King Street Metro station following a public hearing Wednesday night. The city’s plan envisioned a new station design at a cost of $6.95 million, combining $4.75 million in grants and $2.2 million from the Alexandria Transportation Improvement Program. The commission voted to add shelters at the Kiss-and-Ride area and dynamic message boards for buses to the city’s preferred plan. The commission rejected constructing the project in six phases instead of two to minimize the impact to station operations and installing a brick sidewalk on Diagonal Road as opposed to concrete. The King Street Metro is in the process of undergoing …

City Eyes Fall Start for Regular Trolley Service in Del Ray

Alexandria's Department of Transportation and Environmental Services is looking into increasing the hours of service for the King Street trolley.

Regular trolley service in Del Ray will begin in September or October at the earliest, according to Alexandria’s director of Transportation and Environmental Services. T&ES chief Rich Baier told Del Ray Patch that despite the city allocating more than $500,000 in the fiscal year 2012 budget toward implementing the motorized trolley service in the neighborhood, the process of selecting a contractor and other matters will push the project into the fall. T&ES Deputy Director Abi Lerner said some of the approximately $510,000 that was allotted for expanding trolley service into Del Ray will be rolled over and combined with new funding in FY2013. How much that is rolled over remains to be determined. From the $510,000, about $190,000 will go …

Maybe where we add Trolleys, which are more attractive, and free, we should consider a reduction in Dash buses, to offset the cost, and because a free Trolley will surely get more ridership. I would be interested in what people think of this? I live on King St. and don't see the need for a Dash bus right behind a Trolley taking the same route.   more ›

Del Ray Trolley Service Will Be on Display in May

Alexandria city staff will demonstrate motorized trolley on Mt. Vernon Avenue at premier First Thursday of 2012.

Del Ray trolley service will be showcased at the May 3 First Thursday street festival. Del Ray Business Association President Maria Wasowski said Monday the city has “made a commitment to bring the trolley to Del Ray” and that the First Thursday festival will offer the first demonstration of the motorized trolley along Mt. Vernon Avenue. “Within a month after that, we will start hammering out regular service,” Wasowski said the DRBA luncheon at Mount Vernon Recreation Center. Wasowski said she believed regular trolley service would run Wednesday through Saturday. Final routes have yet to be determined, she said. In November, Abi Lerner of the city’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services said staff was considering four …

Del Ray Parking Study Suggests Future Implementation of Paid Parking

Immediate recommendations include adding more general parking and creating short-term zones on Mt. Vernon Avenue.

A recent parking study of Del Ray recommends the implementation of paid meters for the entire Mt. Vernon Avenue corridor once parking utilization in the area is in excess of 85 percent. However, the final draft of the study conducted by Kimley-Horn and Associates for the city says "paid parking at this point in time is not appropriate for the Del Ray neighborhood." According to the study, the current overall off-street utilization of parking in the Mt. Vernon Avenue area ranges between 26 percent and 56 percent and the overall on-street utilization currently ranges between 53 percent and 64 percent. The report recommends additional monitoring and the accumulation of data to identify when the system approaches the 85 percent threshold. It …
