As I have done on each of the last fourteen years, my mother and I will make our Sunday trek to Arlington Cemetery to see Rolling Thunder. I am thrilled to see the recognition that was never given to those who served this country during the Vietnam War. I was born in Ft. Hood, Texas. Elvis Presley was there when my father was a young 2nd Lieutenant. Two weeks later we moved to Alaska. Dad was a …   more ›

SunTrust Bank on Duke Street Robbed Tuesday Afternoon

Police: Man implied he had a weapon.

The SunTrust Bank at 3101 Duke St. in Alexandria in the Alexandria Commons shopping center was robbed Tuesday afternoon of an undisclosed amount of money, according to Alexandria Police. A man walked into the bank at about 2:30 p.m. Tuesday and asked to use the restroom, said Alexandria Police spokeswoman Ashley Hildebrandt. After coming out of the restroom he walked up to a teller and implied he had a weapon, she said. He fled the bank with an undisclosed amount of cash. The suspect is described as a black male, about six feet tall wearing dark pants and a dark shirt, Hildebrandt said. It's the first time "in recent memory" that the bank "has been hit," she said. No one was hurt in the incident.  The bank is close to Bishop Ireton High …

Speak Out: VA Dems Say GOP Ticket Is Anti-Gay, Bad for Business

Democratic leaders and gay advocates are slamming the Virginia Republican Party's ticket — Ken Cuccinelli for governor and E.W. Jackson for lieutenant governor. Do you agree with them?

Democratic Party Chair of Virginia Charniele Herring, state Sen. Adam Ebbin and gay-rights advocate James Parrish held a teleconference Tuesday afternoon lambasting the “dangerous and hateful attacks on gay and lesbian Virginians that Republican candidates Ken Cuccinelli and E.W. Jackson have made a centerpiece of their careers.” Herring asked why an employer would want to bring business to the commonwealth when gubernatorial candidate Cuccinelli and lieutenant governor candidate Jackson “demonize” gay employees. “It’s damaging to our commonwealth’s reputation as an inclusive place to live,” she said. Jackson has labeled gay people perverted and “frankly very sick people psychologically, mentally and emotionally,” according to the …

Of course these are both right-wing nut jobs who will make the commonwealth a national joke. Their neanderthal views on gay people are only the tip of the christian conservative iceberg of morality they want to drop on us. Unfortunately, Terry McAuliffe is a weak candidate (and his running mate will likely be also) and the party in the White House has lost every Virginia gubernatorial election …   more ›

Sen. Kaine, Rep. Duckworth Tout Troop Talent Act in Alexandria

Bill would streamline the military-to-civilian licensing process for certain occupations.

U.S. Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) and U.S. Rep. Tammy Duckworth (D-8th, Ill.) visited American Legion Post 24 in Old Town Tuesday to discuss the Troop Talent Act, a bill designed to streamline the military-to-civilian licensing process for certain occupations. “It’s the right thing to do for those who served,” said Kaine, who was elected to the U.S. Senate in November and serves on the Armed Forces committee. “And it helps our economy.” Kaine and Duckworth, a Purple Heart recipient from the Iraq War and first-time congresswoman, both spoke of the difficulty veterans face when transitioning back to civilian and professional life. Often the training some soldiers receive is not accredited in the private sector. The unemployment rate for veterans …

What Do You Think of the Jack Diamond Show Replacement 'The Bert Show'?

Radio station personality Bert Weiss has taken over the morning spot replacing the "Jack Diamond Morning Show" on 107.3 FM with "The Bert Show." Are you tuning in or tuning out?

Morning radio talk show personality Jack Diamond’s departure from Mix-107.3 has sparked a flurry of forlorn followers, who have had plenty to say on Patch since his departure in late April. “The Jack Diamond Morning Show” featured Diamond as well as listener phone calls, sidekicks, traffic and news reports, Hollywood gossip and of course Diamond’s insights about his wife and children. Bert Weiss, who Diamond called a “protégé and partner” has taken over the morning show slot. The station replaced Diamond's program with the syndicated “The Bert Show” out of Atlanta. Weiss’ co-host is Kristin Klingshim along with co-host and executive producer Jeff Dauler. Weiss is married with two boys and loves to travel.  To promote listenership, the new …

I didn't know how much I valued Jack until he was gone. Although the show wasn't perfect, it was a couple of thousands times better than the idiocy that replaced it. I can't imagine what the station management was thinking, but whoever made the decision should be fired. The Bert Show needs to be replaced. If they can't get Jack back, they need to find someone else with his integrity and …   more ›
