Hank Williams and John Denver Tributes, Holiday Trolley to Mount Vernon and Reptiles in Old Town

Plus, family fun at Chinquapin Rec Center and Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes.

A glance at the weekend ahead in Alexandria, including plenty of live music and family fun:

Hank Williams Tribute — Kick back and enjoy the fine tunes of “The Hillbilly Shakespeare” at this 7:30 p.m. show Friday, Dec. 27 at the Birchmere (3701 Mount Vernon Ave.). Performers include Claire Lynch, Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer, Robin and Linda Williams and Their Fine Group, Rickie Simpkins, Dave Chappell and Mark Schatz. Tickets at $29.50 and available through the Birchmere website.

Family Fun Night at ChinquapinAlexandria’s Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities will kickoff its new monthly Family Fun Nights at Chinquapin Recreation Center (3210 King St.) at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 27.

The first Family Fun Night will feature a Wipeout-style activity using a floating, inflatable obstacle course in the center’s indoor pool. Holiday Trolley to Mount Vernon — Extend your holiday season with a trolley trip from Old Town to George Washington’s Mount Vernon Dec. 27-29. The holiday trolley will board at the corner of King and N. Fairfax streets on the hour from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The trolley will return to Old Town on the half-hour from 9:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tickets for the trolley include admission to Mount Vernon and cost $25 for adults and $8 for children under 12. Live Animal Show — Check out an educational animal show featuring plenty of reptiles at noon Saturday, Dec. 28 at the Old Town Theater (815 King St.). Doors open at 10 a.m. Tickets are $9 and available through the Old Town Theater website.

Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes — If you’ve ever set foot on the Jersey Shore or you’re a fan of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, chances are you’ve heard of this Jersey Shore group. Little Steven Van Zandt was a founding member and many E-Streeters have recorded or performed with the Jukes over the years. The group had a string of well-regarded albums in the late 1970s and early 80s, including 1976’s “I Don’t Want to Go Home.” They take the stage at the Birchmere (3701 Mount Vernon Ave.) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 28. Tickets at $39.50 and available through the Birchmere website. Local musician Eric Scott is also on the bill.

IMPART Exhibit — The Art League Gallery at the Torpedo Factory Art Center (105 N. Union St.) is currently showing its IMPART Ceramics Exhibit featuring work by eight ceramic artists, all of whom are part of the League’s IMPART Project. The project is a unique collaboration between The Art League and the Wounded Warriors at Fort Belvoir that offers the creative outlet of visual arts to recently injured military personnel, their escorts and caregivers, while aiding their transition to health and healing. The exhibit was recently featured in The Washington Post. The Art League Gallery opens at 10 a.m. Monday through Saturday and is open through 6 p.m. On Thursday, the hours are extended to 9 p.m. The gallery is open from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday.

John Denver Tribute — It’ll be almost heaven at the Birchmere at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 29 when Ted Vigil and Steve Weisberg lead this tribute to Henry John Deutschendorf Jr., better known as John Denver. Tickets at $25 and available through the Birchmere website.
