Celebrate Community 5K/1K Fun Run, One Man Lord of the Rings, Love Canon String Band and 'Primary Colors'

Plus, Alexandria Winter Restaurant Week begins Friday.

A look at the weekend ahead in Alexandria:

Alexandria Restaurant WeekAlexandria’s Winter Restaurant Week kicks off Friday, Jan. 17 and runs through Sunday, Jan. 26 at eateries throughout the city. Fifty restaurants will offer either a $35 prix-fixe three-course dinner or a $35 dinner for two. Junior Brown — The country guitarist hits the stage at the Birchmere (3701 Mount Vernon Ave.) at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 17. He’ll be joined by Jackson Edwards of The WeatherVanes. Tickets are $25.

“Primary Colors” — In conjunction with its “Primary Colors” art exhibit, Del Ray Artisans will screen the 1998 movie of the same name at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 18 at the gallery (2704 Mount Vernon Ave.)  There’s a suggested donation of $3.

One Man Lord of the Rings — Charlie Ross brings his take on Tolkien to the Birchmere (3701 Mount Vernon Ave.) for a 7:30 p.m. show Saturday, Jan. 18. Tickets are $35

Love Canon String Band — These conservatory-trained string musicians kick out bluegrass covers of 80s rock hits (Yes, you read that correctly). They hit the Old Town Theater (815 King St.) for a 9 p.m. show on Saturday, Jan. 18. Tickets are $12.50 (more at the door). Doors open at 5 p.m.  

2014 Celebrate Community 5K/1K Fun Run — Agudas Achim Congregation kicks off its yearlong centennial celebration with this fun run that begins at 9 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 19 that begins and finishes on Eisenhower Avenue near the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Strollers are welcome, but leave to dogs at home. There is a $35 registration prior to the event for the 5K, $20 for the 1K.
