Redskins, Del Ray Citizens Association and Remembering 9/11

Plus, Mike Elosh at Elmo's and the return of Alexandria City Council.

We’re looking at a busy week here in and around Del Ray. Here are some events and other happenings to occupy your thoughts this week:

Are you ready for some football? — The Washington Redskins jump back into action Monday night when they host the Philadelphia Eagles. Robert Griffin III and the gang are looking to build on the success of last year’s campaign, which included an NFC East title and a berth in the playoffs. Kickoff is at 6:55 p.m. at FedEx Field in Landover, Md. If you don’t have tickets and are looking for a place to watch in Del Ray, I’ve always liked catching games at Del Ray Pizzeria (2218 Mount Vernon Ave.).

DRCA meeting — The Del Ray Citizens Association emerges from summer break with a 7 p.m. Monday meeting at the Reingold office building (433 E. Monroe Ave.). Featured speakers for Monday’s meeting include Mark Jinks, the deputy city manager, and Jim Spengler, the director of the Department of Recreation, Parks and Cultural Activities.

Remembering 9/11 — The City of Alexandria invites the public to a 10 a.m. Wednesday remembrance ceremony for the 12th anniversary of the events of Sept. 11, 2001. The event will take place in Market Square at 301 King St. The purpose of the commemoration is to give thanks and pay tribute to those who responded on 9/11 without fear, acted without hesitation, and gave their lives to save others. The ceremony will feature remarks from Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille, Alexandria Sheriff Dana Lawhorne, Police Chief Earl Cook and Fire Chief Adam Thiel.

Mike Elosh — This local singer-songwriter, who does some great covers and has some clever songs of his own, visits St. Elmo’s Coffee Pub (2300 Mount Vernon Ave.) for a free show beginning at 8 p.m. Wednesday. Check out Mike’s website for samples of some of his tunes.
