First Thursday (Again), Todd Rundgren, National Night Out and Free Yoga

A look at the week of Aug. 5 in the Del Ray area.

Sure, it’s Monday and you’re in a sour mood. If that’s what you want to do, fine. But I think this week has a lot of potential.

Here are 5 Things this week in Del Ray to take you away from the Monday doldrums for at least a few minutes:

First Thursday (Again) —  The Del Ray Business Association presents its monthly summer street festival from 6 to 9 p.m. Thursday along Mount Vernon Avenue. The event was rescheduled because of rain last week. This month’s theme is “Did You Know?” and some Del Ray’s lesser-known businesses will be highlighted with booths and other fun stuff. It’s a free event, so bring the whole family.

The Mount Vernon Community School PTA is collecting art supplies, new and used books and gently warn children's clothing at the farmers market lot (Oxford and Mount Vernon avenues) throughout the evening.

Todd Rundgren — The diverse and prolific pop star who broke through with 1972’s  “Something/Anything?” hits The Birchmere (3701 Mount Vernon Ave.) at 7:30 p.m. Monday. Tickets are $45. It’s a nice consolation if you didn’t get tickets to Kris Kristofferson’s two-night stand at the venue beginning Tuesday (I’m taking my old man).

National Night Out — The Del Ray Citizens Association is hosting a National Night Out gathering from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday in the field next to Mount Vernon Recreation Center. Other associations are hosting events throughout the city on Tuesday (The Alexandria Police Department plans on releasing a full list on Monday). Meet your neighbors, enjoy free food, music and games, and learn how you can get involved in your community and help make it safer.

Free yoga — Check out “Cool Yoga,” a free, outdoor yoga class that will be held every Wednesday in August at 1900 Mount Vernon Ave. For more information, check out the “Cool Yoga” event listing posted here on Del Ray Patch.

National Frozen Custard Day — This holiday is celebrated on Thursday. I wonder where we Del Ray folks can celebrate? Anyone? Bueller?
