Bike Lanes on King Street, Waterfront Market Opens and the Turkey Trot

Plus, City Council and Alexandria's tree-lighting ceremony.

A quick look at the week ahead in Alexandria:

Bike Lanes on King Street — Alexandria’s Traffic and Parking Board will consider a proposal at its Monday, Nov. 25 meeting (7:30 p.m., City Hall, 301 King St.) to narrow the vehicle lanes in segments on King Street between Russell Road and Janney’s Lane and install bicycle lanes and sharrows in an effort to slow vehicle speeds and create a safer environment for all who traverse the roadway. The proposal, which calls for the removal of 27 on-street parking spaces (down from an initial suggestion of 37), has fanned a feud between residents and cyclists. Frank H. Buckley, a law professor and King Street resident who has called the proposal “anti-car owner” and “anti-homeowner” at an October meeting, penned an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal about the issue. Buckley’s “bike wars” piece inspired a news segment from NBC Washington and drew critical responses on cycling advocacy blog Wash Cycle and DC Streets Blog

Waterfront Market and Cafe Opens — Jody Manor’s new market and fast-casual eatery opens at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 26 in the Torpedo Factory Arcade. The spot features grocery items, sandwiches, sushi and more with a bevy of outdoor seating along the City Marina and King Street.
