Excessive Heat Hits Del Ray

With temperatures rising, Patch offers some tips for staying cool in Alexandria.

Late June will feel like late August this weekend in Alexandria as temperatures reach the upper 90s and maybe triple digits Thursday through Monday.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch for Friday morning through Friday evening. The NWS forecast calls for heat index values of up to 110 degrees. 

The high temperature will be 94 with sun on Thursday. Temperatures will climb to 98 Friday, 99 Saturday and 100 Sunday, with slightly cooler temps on Monday and Tuesday, according to the NWS forecast.

Friday’s skies will be partly cloudy, and there is a slight chance of thunderstorms Friday afternoon, evening and overnight. Saturday and Sunday will be sunny and mostly clear.

The humidity will hover around 50 percent during the day, rising slightly overnight from Thursday through Monday.

Local Pools

Warwick Pool, located at 3301 Landover Street, is open noon to 6 p.m. on weekdays and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends. Admission fees are listed here.

Other Places

Movies start at 11 a.m. at the Regal Potomac Yard 16 movie theater.

Frozen Goodness

Thursday’s custard flavor of the day at the  is caramel heathbar. Coconut is the flavor on Friday and Saturday. Or, grab some sorbet and bring home a frozen puppy pop for Fido.

Of course, all of Del Ray’s coffee shops have caffeine on ice (iced coffee, iced tea and more).

Heat Tips

  • If you don’t have air conditioning, go somewhere that has it. If you have to, try to stay on the lowest floor of a building and stay out of the sun.
  • Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated—a key component to keeping yourself cool.
  • Dress in light colored, lightweight clothes.
  • Try to spend the hottest part of the day in an air-conditioned location, such as your local library, movie theater or mall.
  • Check on your elderly neighbors, who are more susceptible to heat-related health problems.
  • Even with shade and water, it’s just too hot for your animals to be outside.
