Usually it takes a while—a few games, a couple weeks—for a softball team’s bats to get hot.
That hasn’t been a problem for W.T. Woodson (3-0), averaging 14 runs per game this year.
The latest victim was T.C. Williams. The Titans (0-2) fell 15-0 on Friday in Fairfax to a potent Woodson squad.
“They are clearly very talented, a very solid team,” T.C. Williams coach Jennifer Moshier said of Woodson.
It was the first game in nine days for the Titans, who fell 8-2 to Thomas Jefferson in their opener March 16.
Woodson senior pitcher Naomi Kennedy tossed a perfect game. She struck out nine of the 15 batters she faced in the five-inning contest.
Woodson senior center fielder K.J. Johnson was the star of the night, driving in nine of the Cavaliers’ 15 runs.
Her two-RBI double in the first inning put Woodson ahead, 3-0. She added an RBI single in the second inning, then had another two-RBI double in the third.
Johnson saved the best for last, with a fourth-inning grand slam that provided Woodson its final runs of the night. She smacked a 1-0 pitch down the left-field line, and it cleared the 15-foot-high scoreboard.
Titans senior Evelyn Lee pitched the first three innings on Friday, striking out six. She gave way to junior Lara Skye Whitlow in the fourth inning.
T.C. Williams’ schedule picks up this coming week, with home games against Robert E. Lee (6:30 p.m. Tuesday) and West Springfield (6:30 p.m. Friday).
T.C. Williams has just two seniors on its 13-player roster, the rest juniors. Some of those players haven’t played before, said Moshier, in her third season as Titans coach.
So the focus is more on long-term success.
“We’re hoping to improve in the future,” she said.
