Ripken Takes in Aces Game

Baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. stops by Frank Mann Field to watch his son play.

Baltimore Orioles legend and Baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. visited on Saturday to watch his son, Ryan Ripken, play for the Youse's Orioles against the Alexandria Aces

Ryan Ripken was 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI as the Orioles defeated the Aces 15-5.

Chris Sweeney homered for the Aces.

Both teams play in the Cal Ripken Collegiate Baseball League, a wooden bat summer league made up of amateur players from a variety of colleges and universities throughout the country. The league is regionally located in the Baltimore-Washington area. It is named after Cal Ripken Sr.

The Aces have just four home dates left in the regular season:

  • Friday vs. Vienna River Dogs at 7 p.m.
  • Saturday vs. Baltimore Redbirds at 5 p.m. (Doubleheader, second game at 7 p.m.)
  • Monday vs. Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts at 7 p.m.
  • July 24 vs. D.C. Grays at 7 p.m. (make-up game)

Big thanks to Pat Malone for passing on this photo of Cal Ripken Jr. posing with Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille and City Councilman Frank Fannon.

It's great to see Cal Ripken with two of Alexandria's own native sons, Bill Euille and Frank Fannon, out at Frank Mann Field. Most Alexandrians probably don't know that both Bill and Frank were born and raised here in Alexandria, each who are now serving their city as mayor and councilman. I hope that Cal has a chance to come back to Alexandria some time soon to enjoy the warmth and charm of great Aces baseball.
