Del Ray Hosts YoKid Challenge Alexandria

Nonprofit YoKid teamed up with Whole Foods on Sunday for the third annual YoKid Challenge Alexandria at Mount Vernon Recreation Center.

The event featured yoga mat and T-shirt giveaways, a 108 Sun Salutation challenge and other healthy family activities.

Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille made a stop at the event on Sunday afternoon.

The event was aimed at combating childhood obesity by educating kids and their parents about health, wellness and nutrition. In Alexandria, 43.5 percent of children between the ages of 2 and 5 are overweight or obese, while 23.5 percent of kids between 6 and 10 fall into the same categories.

YoKid is nonprofit organization that provides yoga and meditation classes for at-risk and under-served youth in the District, Maryland and Virginia.
