Sherman made the announcement late Monday evening in a T.C. Williams PTSA email newsletter. The student’s name and cause of death were not mentioned.

“I am very sorry to share with you that one of our senior students died this weekend,” Sherman wrote. “The family has requested that information about the cause of death not be shared at this time.”

A conference room next to Principal Suzanne Maxey’s office at the high school will be set aside for families on Tuesday. Members of the ACPS Crisis Response Team will be available to meet with students individually or in groups in the days ahead. Sherman encouraged parents to contact the school office if they feel their child is in need of additional assistance.

“I know that all of you join me in expressing our sympathies for the family and in feeling sadness for the passing of one of our students,” Sherman wrote. “We share a common bond of caring for one another, of coming together in times of need, and of recognizing how precious and fragile life can be.”

A message sent to the ACPS communications director was not immediately returned Monday evening.
