ACPS Schedules Inclement Weather Make-up Days

Students will makeup school on scheduled teacher work days instead of adding days to the end of the calendar.

The Alexandria City School Board moved Thursday to modify the current 2013-14 school calendars to allow for more flexibility in making up classroom time missed by weather-related closures.

The school system’s traditional and modified calendars previously required inclement weather closures beyond the third day to be made up by adding school days to the end of the year.

The board unanimously approved revised calendars that allow those days to be made up on two specific teacher work days and professional days.

For the traditional calendar, those dates will be March 14 and April 11.

For the modified calendar employed at Mount Vernon Community School and Samuel Tucker, the dates will be Feb. 28 and March 21.

These days will makeup the fourth (Jan. 21) and fifth (Jan. 22) weather-related closures of the school year.

If ACPS has more than six weather-related closures, the administration said it could add minutes to the school day to make up for lost instructional time as opposed to adding days to the end of the year.
