Wilson Making Another Run at City Council

Del Ray resident Justin Wilson is making another run at Alexandria City Council.

Wilson, an Amtrak engineer and former councilmember from 2007 to 2009, launched a campaign Facebook page on Monday morning.

“My experience with our City helps me understand that the primary challenge of the next City Council will be protecting our fiscal health,” Wilson wrote in a statement on the page. “In returning to City Council, I will work with you to ensure that Alexandria is a place where commerce thrives, our government has the resources to provide critical services, and leads the region's recovery from the difficult economic climate.”

Wilson has remained civically active since failing to regain his seat in 2009. He serves on the DASH Bus board, the state board of Juvenile Justice, the Northern Virginia Regional Park Authority board, the Hopkins House Board of Trustees and the Alexandria Transportation Commission.

“While I have contributed through my service on these boards and commissions, I believe I can only accomplish so much outside of public office,” he wrote. “That is why I'm thrilled to share the news with you that I have decided to run for Alexandria City Council.”

Over the weekend, Sean Holihan, a West End resident and a former president of the Young Democrats of Virginia, announced that he is considering a council run.

Holihan currently works as an advocacy and communications director at NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia. In Alexandria, he serves as vice chair of the city’s Safety Action Program and, with Wilson, on the Hopkins House board.

Holihan has already launched a campaign website.

Last week, the Alexandria Democratic Committee decided it will hold a primary to select council candidates on June 12, 2012, the same day as the U.S. Congressional primary. The council election will be held on Nov. 6.
