Scott Gordon Announces City Council Candidacy

Del Ray resident describes himself as a moderate Republican.

Scott Gordon, the current secretary of the Del Ray Citizens Association and a member of Alexandria’s Sister Cities Committee, announced his candidacy for City Council next year in a press release sent out Wednesday morning.

Gordon, a financial services professional, describes himself as a moderate Republican.

In the release, Gordon said he is a proponent of “protecting our waterfront from destruction in the name of redevelopment” but would like to see existing spaces utilized “appropriately” for retail and residential use.

An Alexandria resident for about 10 years, Gordon also said he would like to streamline the permit and licensing process for businesses. He is a member of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce as well as the American Civil Liberties Union.

Gordon said he is a supporter of building bipartisanship to “affect positive change.”

Frank Fannon is currently the lone Republican on City Council. He spent a total of $85,016—about $30,000 more than any other candidate—on his 2009 campaign, according to the Virginia Public Access Process.

Alicia Hughes, who endorsed Republican U.S. Senate candidate George Allen in September, was elected in 2009 as an independent.
