School Board Member Peabody Running for Council

Two-term board member has lived in Alexandria since 1972.

Arthur Peabody, a two-term member of the Alexandria School Board, confirmed with Patch on Sunday that he is running for City Council as a Democrat.

“There are some very serious issues facing our city,” said Peabody, who is assigned to Charles Barrett, George Mason and Patrick Henry elementary schools as a member of the board from District B. “From all the development to creating a safety net for citizens.”

A Massachusetts native, Peabody has called Alexandria home since 1972. He currently lives on N. Quaker Lane and is the father of two T.C. Williams High School graduates. He serves as associate counsel with the Blue Cross Blue Shield Association and is a retired attorney at the U.S. Department of Justice and U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia.

Peabody serves as a board member with Alexandria Senior Services and the Alexandria Bar Association, and has served on the School Board Budget Advisory Committee.

A former school board chairman, Peabody said he had planned to announce his candidacy at February’s Alexandria Democratic Committee meeting but ended up out of town working on a trial in Boston.

Peabody is one of nine Democrats who have formally announced bids for city council. Incumbents and are running, as well as former council members and . The other candidates are , , and .

“There are opportunities,” Peabody said. “Many people are stepping up.”
