McAuliffe to Talk Veteran Support in Alexandria Friday

The Democratic gubernatorial candidate will discuss his plan to support Virginia's veterans and military families.

Terry McAuliffe, Democratic candidate for governor of Virginia, will make a campaign stop in Alexandria to hold a roundtable with veterans and military families Friday afternoon.

The event will give McAuliffe an opportunity to discuss his platform on support of military families in the Commonwealth, a plan to improve employment opportunities, higher education, healthcare and other supports for veterans and their loved ones.

If elected, McAuliffe is proposing to streamline the process for veterans to find civilian work and to bolster Gov. Bob McDonnell’s Virginia Values Veterans (V3) program, a public-private partnership that McAuliffe has called a success.

The Democratic hopeful also wants to set up scholarships for non-degree workforce training, arguing that many returning vets want to get jobs in trades.

Support for homeless veterans and those struggling with mental health issues are also included in the package.

Friday’s roundtable will be held at SBG Technology Solutions, a veteran-owned business in Alexandria. McAuliffe will be joined by a “small group” of veterans and their families, according to his campaign.

McAuliffe and his Republican opponent, Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, will participate Friday morning in a forum with business leaders in Manassas. It will be sponsored by the Prince William and Fredericksburg Chambers of Commerce.
