Krupicka to Resign from Council on Tuesday

Alexandria City Councilman Rob Krupicka (D) submitted his resignation letter to the mayor and other members of council on Friday. His exit is effective at 7 p.m. Tuesday, when council returns from recess for its first legislative meeting since June.

Krupicka, who is in his third council term, . He must resign from council and the State Board of Education before being sworn in as delegate.

“After consultation with the Mayor, the City Attorney and the City Manager I am submitting my resignation from the Alexandria City Council effective at 7PM on Tuesday, September 11th,” Krupicka wrote in his resignation letter. “I am looking forward to the opportunity to continue working with you and serving this City as a member of Alexandria’s legislative delegation to Richmond. I eagerly await your ideas, suggestions, advice and friendship as I take on this new role in our community.”

Krupicka added that he was proud of several projects he had worked on as a member of council, including eco-city and community pathways initiatives and small business and education reforms.

He also thanked city staff and Elizabeth Jones, his council aide. Jones will serve as Krupicka’s legislative aide in his new role as delegate.

Krupicka will resign from the State Board of Education at its next meeting, which is scheduled for Sept. 27. He plans on taking the oath of office for the House of Delegates that evening.

The Del Ray resident said at his election party on Tuesday night that he had hoped to continue to serve on council through the end of September.

At its meeting Tuesday, council will consider a resolution certifying the existence of a council vacancy, .

After the vacancy is certified, Alexandria Circuit Court Judge Lisa Kemler will appoint someone to the remaining four months of the term.
