Holihan Officially Joins Alexandria City Council Race

Democrat says he is 'committed to keeping Alexandria the progressive city we all love.'

Sean Holihan will announce his candidacy for Alexandria City Council at Monday evening’s meeting of the Alexandria Democratic Committee.

Holihan launched a campaign website in December announcing that he was exploring the possibility of a bid.

“I’m excited to join the race for city council,” Holihan said in a statement. “As Republicans in Richmond continue to pass the buck to localities by refusing to fund our roads and schools, the battle to protect education, affordable housing, police and firefighters and our social safety net will move from the state to the local level. It’s important we have people on council that are committed to keeping Alexandria the progressive city we all love.”

Holihan currently works as an advocacy and communications manager for NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia. He is a former president of the Virginia Young Democrats and has worked in the General Assembly for Sen. George Barker (D-39th) and former delegate Brian Moran.

Holihan also serves as vice chair of the Alexandria Alcohol Safety Action Program and on the board of Hopkins House.

Holihan will officially kick off his campaign Feb. 25 in Old Town at the home of Nikki Enfield and Andy Bechhoefer.

The Alexandria Democratic Committee will hold its meeting at 7:30 p.m. Monday at . Other candidates are expected to officially announce their bids for city offices.

Former Democratic council members and have already announced that they are seeking office again. Newcomer is also running for council as a Democrat.
