Hepburn Joins Alexandria City Council Race

West End resident Michael Hepburn is the 13th Democrat to declare candidacy.

Democrat Michael Hepburn officially announced his candidacy for Alexandria City Council in a statement released Monday morning.

Before coming to a decision about his candidacy, the West End resident conducted a listening tour of the city over the last six months.

Last week, he was likely to enter the race but wanted to talk it over with his family over the weekend.

“Every person in our city deserves to have an opportunity to be successful and our government plays a vital role in making sure that opportunity is not just a dream but it is a reality for all of our residents,” Hepburn wrote in his statement.

Hepburn currently serves on Alexandria’s Economic Opportunities Commission and nine other civic boards and organizations in the city. He is also a member of the PTA.

In his statement, Hepburn identified several core principles to his leadership, including creating a “pathway to success” for every child in Alexandria, maintaining affordable housing and seeking smart growth through inclusive collaboration, creating strong communities with safe streets and pursuing “effective fiscal policy and innovative economic development.” Hepburn also says he’d like to empower citizens through engagement.

Hepburn is the 13th Democrat to enter the city council race. Six Democrats will be selected for the general election ballot during a Democratic primary tentatively scheduled for June 12.
