Carsharing companies allow people to reserve and rent cars for short periods of time, often by the hour.

Capital Bikeshare makes bicycles available for shared use mainly for short rides. The bikes are available at stations and members who pay for an annual or short-term membership fee can remove them from stations and return them to stations eleswhere.

Alexandria followed Arlington County and the District into the Capital Bikeshare network in 2012. It is the largest active bikeshare system in the United States.

On Monday, The Washington Post reported a former Capitol Bikeshare employee is alleging the company underpaid some of its employees for more than two years.
