Donley Endorses Krupicka in State Senate Primary

Alexandria vice mayor and chair of the Alexandria Democratic Committee joint campaign offers late nod.

Alexandria Vice Mayor Kerry Donley offered his endorsement of Rob Krupicka on Thursday evening, less than a week before the Aug. 23 Democratic Primary for the 30th State Senate District.

Krupicka, who serves on the Alexandria City Council with Donley, is running against Del. Adam Ebbin (D-49th) and Arlington County School Board member Libby Garvey for the seat previously held by Patsy Ticer.

“As the chair of the Alexandria Democratic Committee joint campaign I was going to stay neutral but I feel compelled to no longer sit on the sidelines,” Donley said in a statement released by the Krupicka campaign. “This campaign has reinforced my view that we need officials in Richmond that understand and appreciate the challenges of local government and that know that is where the rubber hits to road in terms of serving our community. I know Rob will be a partner for us in Richmond that will help us deal with transportation, education, the economy and the many other challenges we face.”

Krupicka had previously received the endorsements of Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille and Councilwoman Del Pepper, as well as several other elected officials from Alexandria.

Donley was the highest vote getter in the 2009 At-Large City Council election, thereby becoming vice mayor of the city. He served as mayor of Alexandria from 1996 to 2003.

“Northern Virginia needs officials in Richmond who understand what it’s like to solve problems at the local level and who are committed to moving us forward," Krupicka said in the statement. “I’ve worked with Kerry for years on issues from mass transit to school construction, and I hope to continue that relationship as Senator.”

A message left with Donley was not immediately returned.
