City Manager Search is Underway

Council hopes to make hire by early fall

The Alexandria City Council has opened a nationwide search for a new city manager. In a memo, Mayor Bill Euille said the search will remain open to internal city candidates.

Current City Manager Jim Hartmann announced and promised to stay on with the city through the adoption of a budget for fiscal year 2012.

Through the use of an executive recruitment firm and focus groups, the city plans to start interviewing candidates in July. It hopes to have a new city manager in place by September or October.

Councilman Paul Smedberg, who will select the executive recruitment firm along with Euille, called the hiring timeline “aggressive” during Tuesday’s council meeting.

Euille and Smedberg have already narrowed the field from 11 recruitment firms to four.

There will be three focus groups employed in the selection. One panel will be made up of citizens nominated by council members, another will be comprised of city employees and the third will contain the city department heads. The council plans to have all three focus groups assembled by the end of March.

A hearing where the public can weigh in on the selection is scheduled for April 16.
