Campaign Signs Coming Down With Irene Approaching

Signs could become dangerous projectiles in strong winds.

Patch received a couple emails this morning from readers expressing concerns about the campaign signs that remain posted across the region following Tuesday’s primaries. The emailers were worried about the signs becoming projectiles once Hurricane Irene reaches the area on Saturday.

R. Kirk McPike, campaign manager for Adam Ebbin’s victory in the Democratic primary in Virginia’s 30th State Senate District, told Patch in an email that his team headed out Friday afternoon to remove the campaign signs.

He also encouraged Ebbin's supporters to bring the signs off their yards indoors before the weekend.

"They can go back out on Monday, but it's important to keep our neighborhoods safe during the storm," McPike wrote.

The two 30th District campaigns that lost Tuesday are also making efforts to remove signs.

“We're in the process of shutting everything down as we speak, and taking down the median signs is certainly a priority,” said Carter Batey, campaign manager of Alexandria City Councilman Rob Krupicka’s bid.

Max Glass, manager of Libby Garvey’s campaign, said his team has made “every effort” in the last 24 hours to remove the Garvey signs.

“If people see Libby signs still up in public right-of-ways, please let us know by emailing me at cm@libbyforsenate.com,” Glass wrote in an email. “Just let me know the street and nearest intersection so I can get somebody over there to hopefully pick them up before Sunday.”

The campaign signs pose a good reminder to residents to bring in any items that could be blown by high winds or become dangerous projectiles.

With Irene approaching, the to bring in garbage cans and lawn furniture.
