ARCC Party Canvass Set for Saturday

Canvass will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Minnie Howard School.

The Alexandria Republican City Committee will hold its party canvass to nominate candidates for City Council on Saturday at the cafeteria.

The canvass will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All registered voters in Alexandria may participate.

Just three candidates—incumbents and and newcomer —filed to run as Republicans on the Nov. 6 ballot. Six is the maximum number of candidates a party can run in the General Election.

Because the ARCC is running fewer candidates than the maximum, the purpose of the canvass “is not to choose among our candidates, rather it is to nominate all three,” ARCC Chairman Tom Fulton said in a statement on the committee’s website. “I believe that each of these candidates brings something unique to our Republican ticket that will help the other two get elected. Our strategy for winning this fall is based on that belief.”

The Alexandria Democratic Committee will whittle down its 14 City Council candidates to six in a citywide primary scheduled for June 12.

Current Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille (D) is running for re-election unopposed in his party. Former Vice Mayor Andrew Macdonald is challenging Euille in the Nov. 6 election as an independent.
