Absentee Voting in Alexandria Begins Friday

Absentee voting in Alexandria for the Aug. 23 primaries opened Friday. Usually held in June, the primaries were backed up to August because of redistricting.

With the primaries falling in a busy time just before the school starts, an absentee ballot might be a good option for many voters.

According to a city release, qualifying circumstances for voting absentee include:

  • You commute and work for 11 of the 13 hours the polls are open.
  • You are a caregiver for a confined family member.
  • You are unable to get to the polls in person on the day of the primaries because of disability or illness.
  • You will be absent on the day of the primaries because of work, school or vacation.

Absentee voting can be done in person at the Alexandria Voter Registration Office located at 132 N. Royal Street or ballots can be sent in the mail.

In-person absentee voting hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Voting hours will be extended to 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 9, 10 and 15. The office will also be open at 8 a.m. on Aug. 20 for the last day of absentee voting. That Saturday, voting will end at 5 p.m.

If you wish to absentee vote by mail, download an application by clicking here or contact the Voter Registration Office.

The final day to apply for an absentee ballot by mail or fax is Aug. 16. Applications must be received by the Registration Office by 5 p.m. that day

Mailed absentee ballots must be received by the Registration Office on or before 7 p.m. on Aug. 23.

Twenty-two of Alexandria’s voting precincts are involved in the two primaries—the Democratic primary for the state senate seat in the 30th district and the Republican primary for the 39th district state senate seat.
