30th District Notebook: More Endorsements, Ebbin Wins Poll

Alexandria firefighters union offers support for Rob Krupicka; Former Vice Mayor Andrew Macdonald praises Libby Garvey's opposition to the waterfront plan

On Thursday, 30th district state senate candidate Rob Krupicka received the endorsement of Alexandria firefighters union Local 2141, which represents more than 190 fire and EMS workers across Alexandria.

“Rob has been a steadfast supporter of the brothers and sisters of Local 2141. He has stood by us throughout his time on the City Council, and I know that he will continue to fight for us in Richmond,” Local 2141 President David Denardo said in a statement. “Rob understands the needs of working families, and we’re proud to support his candidacy for senate.”

The Democratic primary is scheduled for Aug. 23. Krupicka is running against Del. Adam Ebbin (D-49th) and Arlington County School Board Chair Libby Garvey. Tim McGhee is the lone Republican currently in the race. Absentee voting for the race began Friday.

Ebbin was the winner of a recent poll on Virginia politics blog Blue Virginia. Ebbin secured 57 percent of the vote, with Krupicka taking 24 percent and Garvey taking 17 percent.

The website wrote: "Blue Virginia poll results are unscientific, of course, but they're probably a fairly accurate snapshot of where Blue Virginia readers are at with regard to the [primary]."

Last week, Garvey received the endorsement of Andrew Macdonald, a former Alexandria City Council member. Macdonald recently formed Citizens for an Alternative Alexandria Waterfront Plan, a group devoted to protecting Old Town Alexandria’s waterfront from proposed commercial development.

“I am confident that Libby is the best choice to represent our interests in Richmond,” Macdonald said in a statement. “Only Libby has been willing to make bold stands in this race for Alexandria residents. She called out the problems with BRAC at the Mark Center and the selection process—or lack thereof—that Alexandria leaders used to make their ultimate decision. And, as a candidate in this primary, Libby was the sole voice yet again in opposition to the City Planning Office’s redevelopment plans for the Alexandria waterfront.”
