The break happened around 7 p.m. Wednesday and sent a steady stream of water downhill toward storm drains on Commonwealth Avenue.

According to the City of Alexandria website, water to surrounding buildings is shut off temporarily while workers repair water main breaks.

The region could potentially experience a higher number of water main breaks this winter following the August earthquake that shook the East Coast. Pipes may have received damage in the quake. With the weather getting colder, the damaged pipes are more likely to burst.

To report a water main break, call VAWC at 703-549-7080 or 703-491-8814 after normal business hours.
