A suspect sped away after being ordered to get out of his vehicle on Mt. Vernon Avenue early Thursday morning but was later apprehended by Alexandria Police.

A police officer was grazed by the vehicle when the suspect drove off. The officer was not hurt and did not need medical attention.

The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m.

“They eventually got him to stop,” Alexandria Police spokesperson Ashley Hildebrandt said.

The suspect was apprehended near the corner of E. Oxford and Mt. Vernon avenues, about a half-mile from where the suspect grazed the officer.

Hildebrandt was not sure why the suspect was initially pulled over.
