Music teacher Ruthanne Lodato, 59, died Thursday after she was shot at her home on Ridge Road Drive, according to Alexandria police. She died later at the hospital, police said.

"This is a sad day in the City of Alexandria," said Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille. "We wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of Ruthanne Lodato, and our thoughts are with the victims of the Ridge Road Drive shootings. I am confident that the Alexandria Police Department will work swiftly to apprehend the person who committed this horrible crime."

Police were searching for an elderly unidentified white male with gray hair and a small beard, who was still at large Thursday evening.

Lodato, the mother of three children, was the director of Music Together in Alexandria. Classes were often held at Del Ray United Methodist Church and at Chinquapin Rec Center. Lodato held a B.A. degree in Music Education and an M.M. in Piano Pedagogy. She taught at Music Together® for the past 20 years.

Lodato has been teaching music in Alexandria-area schools since 1976, including at Blessed Sacrament Early Childhood Center and Valley Drive Preschool.

She was a piano teacher as well as a church organist.

The investigation is ongoing and very active. Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the Alexandria Police Department at (703) 746.6864.

Thank you for this update. This is so sad and tragic, not to mention alarming for the community.

This is so very, very sad. I remember Ruthanne from years ago when I brought my daughter to her Music Together class.

This is really sad to hear. I used to take my daughter to Music Together with Ruthanne, and my family knew her from Blessed Sacrament. May her family find in peace in knowing she made a difference in this community.

I am so saddened by today's news. My baby is currently in her music class. In the short 5 weeks of knowing Ruthanne, her love for music and children has made such an impact and impression on myself and little one. My deepest condolences to her family.

My son and I were in Ruthann's Music Together class for several years when he was a toddler and preschooler. Today he's a talented 12-year-old pianist, violinist, and composer. The last time I spoke with Ruthanne, two weeks ago, I told her she can take some of the credit for that. She has helped nurture a love of music in so many children and has made Alexandria a more joyful place. What a shock to the community to lose her in such a senseless fashion. My sympathies to her family, as well as my gratitude for the gift she shared with us all.

And the other victim?

Was the caregiver of Ruthanne's elderly mother and had non-life threatening injuries. Hopefully she can identify the killer.

Right, we understand the caregiver was the second shooting victim (which is in the other story here on the site) and has non-life threatening injuries. Police didn't release her name.

Maybe even the 2003 murder of Nancy Dunning! Similar M.O.

This is very sad. My deepest condolences to the family. I understand her father was a judge. Could it be one of the criminal that her father sent to jail. Possibility.

Sad indeed. Just horrific. I hope the family feels teh collective grieving of those in the community. She will be missed by many. Speedy and full recovery for the caregiver as well. I'm sure APD is looking at folks hell bent on getting revenge against the law enforcement community given the connections in this horrible crime and that of the Dunning families. I will say that in this day and technologic age I am simply baffled how this could be carried out in broad daylight on such a busy intersection and with at least two witnesses and still get away scot-free. Someone up there has a security system with an exterior facing camera. Someone had to captured his image.
