Update: Route 1 in Crystal City Reopens

Police investigating an accident involving a pedestrian.

10:21 a.m. Friday update — A 38-year-old Arlington man was taken to George Washington University Hospital with life-threatening injuries Friday morning after being hit by a taxi, according to police.

Authorities say the man was trying to cross a five-lane portion of Jefferson Davis Highway shortly after 2:30 a.m. when he was struck by the cab, which was heading south. A passerby reported the incident, and the driver remained on the scene, according to a news release.

As a result of the investigation, the driver was not charged, police said in the release.

The southbound lane of Route 1 between 20th and 23rd streets in Crystal City is closed until at least 10 a.m. Friday because of an early morning accident involving a pedestrian, according to The Washington Post.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area during their commutes.

Police responded to a report of a driver striking a person around 2:30 a.m. and closed the roadway. Authorities did not know of the condition of the pedestrian, according to the Post.

Travelers are urged to take the George Washington Memorial Parkway as an alternative route.
