Police are investigating a Friday afternoon robbery of the Del Ray post office in the 1900 block of Mount Vernon Avenue.

A man entered the post office, implied a weapon and demanded cash, Alexandria Police Department spokesperson Ashley Hildebrandt said.

Hildebrandt did not know the exact time the incident took place. Police were on the scene shortly after 4 p.m.

The suspect exited the post office with an undisclosed amount of money and entered a vehicle and left the area.

There were no injuries, Hildebrandt said.

Patch will pass on more information as it is determined.

Is there a description of the robber?
Drew Hansen (Editor) January 10, 2014 at 06:05 PM
Not at the moment. Will hopefully get more info later tonight or tomorrow.

I wish I was there for that just so I could cold-cock the piece of sh*t PG county trash that did this. Those post office employees are beyond helpful, polite and kind every time I've been in there.
NoBS January 10, 2014 at 08:06 PM
Drew - do you know if police believe this is connected to the recent bank robberies? Seems like a lot of holdups lately.
NoBS January 10, 2014 at 08:17 PM
BTW, the FBI has jurisdiction over bank robberies by law and a Post Office is federal property so that's a federal crime too. Alexandria PD won't have much to say about with these investigations.
Kelly Ferguson January 11, 2014 at 08:00 AM
I don't remember the man's name but every time I've gone in there the front desk guy is so helpful. Which is saying a LOT for a Post Office employee. I'm so glad he wasn't hurt.
Sunny Yoder January 11, 2014 at 08:07 AM
It's puzzling that a description of the person and the getaway car weren't communicated to the public immediately by law enforcement. No doubt the Patch would share it with its readers.
kpgullott January 11, 2014 at 08:20 AM
Sunny after 11 years of living here the police never seem to release descriptions until at least a day later. The cynic in me wonders if they actually want to catch the criminals
Bob Rouse January 11, 2014 at 09:51 AM
McBrinn - perhaps you could enlighten us on what you mean by "PG county trash"
McBrinn January 11, 2014 at 10:40 AM
I'm not here to instruct. Figure it out on your own Bobby.

Thank goodness Alexandria has brave crime fighters like McBrinn ready to look up from their iPhones to dish out an old fashioned cold-cocking. Murder in Rosemont, bank robberies on the west side, shooting in old town, burglaries in Beverly Hills. Time to step it up APD before McBrinn dusts off the Bat suit. Ka-Pow!
McBrinn January 11, 2014 at 03:48 PM
iPhones are for weenies.

Experience speaking, huh Edmund?
oldtowner January 11, 2014 at 05:54 PM
wow. folks....let's all jump to conclusions....the robber was from PG County and the police aren't doing their jobs? How about we wait a bit before such statements. Do Post Offices typically have surveillance cameras like banks and ATMs? I don't know...perhaps that is why no description of the robber was immediately available....no video. I must say, if I were desperate enough to want to rob something, I don't think I would even consider a post office.
RJ January 12, 2014 at 12:22 AM
FBI or United States Postal Inspection Service?
oldtowner January 15, 2014 at 04:50 PM
well, Adam R.....the Post Office delivered my Christmas packages.....can't say that for UPS.....what's your point?
Todd Hutchings January 19, 2014 at 08:53 AM
I thought it was illegal to bring a weapon into a Post Office? What are these criminals thinking? It reminds me of those mass shootings in the gun free zones. It's a good thing the police are there to protect us.
Bob Rouse January 21, 2014 at 07:52 AM
I figured it out McBrinn - I was just giving you an opportunity to back away from what was pretty obvious to everyone from your "PG county trash" comment.
oldtowner February 18, 2014 at 04:32 PM
well, for all you skeptics on here, I just saw via an Alexandria e-news update that a suspect has been arrested in DC, he is from DC and is awaiting extradition to Alexandria. But I'm sure no one will congratulate the APD for making an arrest. And to McBrinn....no "PG county trash" was mentioned.
Bob Rouse February 20, 2014 at 06:56 AM
OldTowner beat me to it. McBrinn wrong again. http://delray.patch.com/groups/police-and-fire/p/police-arrest-suspect-in-post-office-robbery

Investigation is ongoing. I'd wait a minute before patting yourself on your hairy back.
