Male driver was suffering some form of trauma while driving; bystanders pull him from vehicle.

A man suffering some form of trauma while driving on Mount Vernon Avenue crashed his sedan into the playground outside George Washington Middle School at approximately 6 p.m. Thursday.

Bystanders quickly pulled the man out of the vehicle and carried him to shade before Alexandria first-responders arrived on the scene. A window on the vehicle was broken so the bystanders could unlock the vehicle and remove the man, who was breathing when EMS personnel arrived.

No one was in the playground at the time of the accident. The car knocked over part of the fence surrounding the playground, which is used by Head Start students at the school.
