Jeep Accelerates, Destroys Bus Shelter

No injuries were reported following an incident that closed Mount Vernon Avenue Saturday.

A Jeep Liberty destroyed a bus shelter near the corner of Mount Vernon Avenue and W. Glebe Road after it accelerated while exiting a car wash at the busy intersection just before 1 p.m. Saturday.

An Alexandria Police spokesperson said there were no injuries, only property damage related to the incident.

An eyewitness who asked not to be named said the Jeep, driven by an unidentified female, sped up while coming out of the Mr. Wash exit, struck a Dodge pickup parked nearby and then continued moving up a steep embankment.

Once at the top of the incline, the Jeep collided with the bus shelter, shattering glass across Mount Vernon Avenue.

No one was at the bus stop at the time of the incident.

“We were literally driving by as it happened,” said Michelle Solsby, who was in a car with her husband riding south on Mount Vernon Avenue. “Right before we got to the bus stop, the glass blew out. Then we saw the [Jeep] come into the street.”

She said the driver of the Jeep was able to steer away from incoming traffic just before colliding with Solsby's car.

Traffic in both directions on Mount Vernon Avenue was diverted while the shelter remnants were cleared from the roadway. A street-sweeper vehicle was called to the scene to assist in cleaning the shattered glass.
