Injured Alexandria Police Officer Peter Laboy was treated to a surprise birthday party Saturday, according to NBC Washington.
Laboy turned 46 years old but his cake celebrated his 45th and 46th birthdays. Laboy said he wanted to redo 45 after the events of last year, according to the report.
On Feb. 27, 2013, Laboy was shot in the head during a traffic stop near Lyles-Crouch Traditional Academy in Old Town. He has undergone several surgeries and is back in his Alexandria home undergoing additional therapy.
“Every time you see Peter, it’s hard not to smile because you don’t expect these things to happen in life,” Alexandria Police Chief Earl Cook told NBC Washington.
The man accused of shooting Laboy was ruled competent to stand trial on Jan. 9.
Taxi driver Kashif Bashir is facing one count of attempted capital murder of a law enforcement officer, one count of aggravated malicious wounding and two counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
A trial is expected to begin in early June.
