7:30 p.m. update — The Monday afternoon fire in the second story of a Dewitt Avenue apartment building was accidental in nature, Alexandria Fire Department spokesperson Michael Gerber said.

“A contractor was using a heat gun to remove paint and it got too hot,” Gerber said.

The building was reoccupied by Monday evening.
