Update: Fire Crews Respond to Blaze on Dewitt Avenue

No injuries in Monday afternoon incident.

7:30 p.m. update — The Monday afternoon fire in the second story of a Dewitt Avenue apartment building was accidental in nature, Alexandria Fire Department spokesperson Michael Gerber said.

“A contractor was using a heat gun to remove paint and it got too hot,” Gerber said.

The building was reoccupied by Monday evening.

Fire crews responded to a second-story fire in the 1800 block of Dewitt Avenue that occurred at about 1:30 p.m. Monday.

There were no injuries in the incident, according to an Alexandria Fire Department spokesperson. 

The spokesperson said more information about the incident would be available later in the afternoon.

A water main break occurred on Mount Vernon Avenue near the corner of E. Mason Avenue around the same time Monday, closing part of the road to traffic.
