The city ordinance banning fireworks was established to mitigate injuries and to reduce the risk of fires to the city’s numerous historic buildings. The density and population of the city along with lack of open space “does not allow for the safe discharge of fireworks,” according to the release.

Possession of fireworks is a violation of the city’s Fire Prevention Code, which is a Class 1 misdemeanor offense. It has a penalty of up to one year in jail and up to a $2,500 fine upon conviction.
