Alexandrians Celebrate National Night Out on Aug. 2

Police and city host event to recognize national crime and drug prevention programs

City officials and the Alexandria Police are partnering to celebrate the 28th Annual National Night Out on Tuesday.

The celebration, which takes place from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., is part of a nationwide crime and drug prevention effort sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch.

Residents in more than 27 Alexandria neighborhoods will turn on their porch lights, host neighborhood cookouts and sponsor block parties in support of National Night Out.

Mayor Bill Euille, Acting City Manager Bruce Johnson, members of City Council and Chief of Police Earl Cook plan to visit residents throughout the city along with McGruff the Crime Fighting Dog, the K-9 Unit, Bike Patrol Unit and Motor Unit.

The Del Ray and Warwick Village citizens associations are celebrating National Night Out with a party at Landover Park and Pool from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

There will be live music and the pool will be open. Hot dogs and veggie burgers will be served.

A  bus will shuttle partygoers to Landover Park from  beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Here is a list of all the blocks in Alexandria (pdf) that are participating.
