If you do a lot of shopping at Potomac Yard, police want you to be aware there's been a rash of thefts from shopping carts there lately.

The Alexandria Police Department has recently seen an increase in reports of items stolen from shopping carts while victims were shopping at stores in Potomac Yard Center, including Target, Shoppers, and T.J. Maxx, police said in a news release Friday.

There have been at least six incidents in the past two weeks, they said.

Police are offering the following tips:

• Don't leave your purse or wallet unattended in your shopping cart while browsing.
• Keep your purse closed.
• Carry only items that are needed.
• Take only the credit cards or cash you plan to use.

The Alexandria Police Department has released a flier with tips for shoppers and it is available for download here.

You can call (703) 746-4444 to report a theft of belongings to the Police Department.
