Alexandria Hosting 35 National Night Out Events on Tuesday

National Night Out is an annual effort to promote citizen involvement in crime prevention.

Neighborhood associations and other organizations across Alexandria are celebrating National Night Out Tuesday evening with block parties and other events involving the Alexandria Police Department, fire department, sheriff’s office and city officials.

Founded in 1984, National Night Out is an effort to promote involvement in crime prevention, police-community partnerships, neighborhood camaraderie and to send a message to criminals that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

National Night Out now involves over 37 million people and 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. Territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide, according to the National Night Out website.

“National Night Out is an opportunity for the Alexandria Police Department to strengthen our relationship with the community and thank the residents for their vigilance and their dedication to keeping Alexandria a safe place to live, work and visit,” Alexandria Police Chief Earl Cook said in a press release.
