About five gallons of gasoline spilled into the street at the corner of E. Braddock Road and Mt. Vernon Avenue near early Tuesday evening, according to an Alexandria Fire Department spokesperson.
The spokesperson did not have information about how the gasoline was spilled. One report of the incident on Twitter claimed there was a user error at a gas pump at Yates, but the tweet was quickly deleted.
Mt. Vernon Avenue was blocked between E. Braddock Road and Oak Street around 6:30 p.m., where several fire engines and hazmat vehicles were on the scene.
The city’s Department of Transportation and Environmental Services was called in to clean up the area.
Gasoline did not reach the sewers or waterways, the spokesperson said.
