Tree Cutting on Commonwealth?!!

Does anyone know what's going on with the tree cutting along Commonwealth. For the life of me I didn't see them as damaged or diseased - the stumps that I saw were solid and healthy all the way through. And why so many cut down around MV school? Is the city starting there and moving up the Ave to Old Town? Please say it isn't so. How does the city determine what trees need to go...why this one and why not the exact same looking one right next to it? A few years ago, the city did the same thing along Mt. Vernon and GW Middle School...cut down half the trees. Why? What's the city's policy? Those trees are what make Commonwealth one of the best roads in city.
