Christ Church Youth Participate in Souper Bowl of Caring

Alexandria, VA, February 2, 2014 — Christ Church Youth launched a food drive to tackle hunger and poverty issues in our own community as part of Souper Bowl of Caring. They are participating with youth across the nation working to fight hunger and poverty in their own communities around the time of the Big Game Sunday, February 2. In the weeks leading up to the Big Game, Christ Church Youth are taking a collection of food and/or monetary donations for people in need. They are giving 100% of their donations directly to the Christ Church Outreach Ministries and Lazarus Ministry Food Pantry.

Christ Church is working in various ways to impact hunger in the community throughout the year.  Its Lazarus Food Pantry is open to Alexandrians two mornings a week. Recently, a group of its high school-aged parishioners visited Capitol Hill with the results of their postcard-writing campaign to raise the profile of local hunger issues and met with Senator Mark Warner, Senator Tim Kaine, and Representative Jim Moran to discuss the hunger crisis. The students will also host a 100 meals for $100 event on February 2 at 10:15 a.m. to demonstrate the challenges of feeding a family on a small budget or using only Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) funds. The group will share what they have learned about local hunger and how individuals and a community can continue to address these hunger needs together.
