Did Alexandria Imprison Native Americans Fighting for the British?

True or False?

During the Revolutionary War, Alexandria served as a prisoner of war camp for Native Americans who fought on the side of the British.

Answer: False.

Alexandria served as a prisoner of war camp for Hessian mercenaries, not Native Americans.  Hessians were German soldiers, many from the Hesse region in Germany, who were hired to fight for the British against the American revolutionaries.  About 30,000 Hessians fought for the British during the American Revolution.  One of their duties as prisoners of war was to pave the streets of Alexandria with cobblestones.
